Why have you introduced this framework?

The competency framework has been designed to help us deliver our vision, mission and values by encouraging us to think about how we behave, and how we live the values. Most large organisations have a competency framework, and we believe ours will be a valuable people management tool to support areas like supervision, development and training.

How will I find the time to use it?

The framework won't need much of your time right now – just time to attend a briefing with your manager and some of your own time to get used to the content. After that, it should simply become part of your existing one-to-one's and team meetings. Over time, the competency framework will help us all understand our strengths and identify opportunities for improvement, helping us work together better and making all of our jobs easier. So a small investment of time now will support us in the future.

How did you put it together?

We spoke to employees across Sheffield Homes, in different teams and at different job levels, to find out what skills and behaviours people thought were important. We then summarised and combined these behaviours together to create a draft competency framework. We sought feedback and opinions on this initial draft before creating and launching the final version.
